Wild Things ☂

Wild Things is a 1998 erotic thriller film starring Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Kevin Bacon, Denise Richards, Theresa Russell and Bill Murray. It was directed by John McNaughton. In some countries the film was released as Sex Crimes. An uncut version of the movie, adding seven minutes to its runtime, was released on DVD in 2004. The movie gained notoriety for featuring several sex scenes - in particular, one involving a man and two women simultaneously - that were more explicit than is typically seen in mainstream, big-budget Hollywood movies. It spawned several direct-to-DVD sequels.

 Plot

Sam Lombardo (Dillon) is a happy, sexually promiscuous high school guidance counselor with a socialite for a girlfriend in Blue Bay, Florida. The wealthy and popular Kelly Van Ryan (Richards) accuses him of raping her one day after she had washed his truck. Due to the Van Ryans' high social status and connections, Lombardo's career and life take a heavy toll. Lombardo hires unorthodox lawyer Kenneth Bowden (Murray), but is later incarcerated when a second student, unpopular, trailer trash Suzie Toller (Campbell), also accuses him of rape, with several factors matching Kelly's description of Lombardo's assault.

Lombardo is put on trial, where Bowden badgers Suzie, who admits that she and Kelly had made the whole thing up to get revenge on Lombardo: Suzie for him leaving her in jail and Kelly for him having an affair with her mother, Sandra (Russell). The Van Ryans are humiliated by the scandal, and Lombardo and Bowden negotiate a hefty settlement of $8.5 million. Lombardo leaves town to retire after this, and encounters Kelly and Suzie at his hotel. It turns out that the three of them had been working together the entire time, and planned to split the money.

However, police Detective Ray Duquette (Bacon) becomes suspicious of certain details of the trial and begins investigating further. Duqette harasses both Kelly and Suzie, suggesting he knows everything and that their partners in crime can't be trusted. Duquette also reveals that Lombardo transfered the $8.5 million to a numbered off-shore account and could be in anyone's name; whether all three parties or just Lombardo's. Due to Duquette's actions, Suzie becomes increasingly nervous. Suzie and Kelly meet at the Van Ryan pool and Kelly talks to Lombardo regarding her nervousness and they fear she will expose their plan. Duquette had been videotaping the scene from nearby. The next day when Duquette shows the video to his partner, Gloria, his superior walks in and reads him the riot act over the litany of transgressions he committed in obtaining what was on the video.

Even though they agreed not to meet again, Kelly takes a drunk and high Suzie to the beach (after telling her that they were going to the movies) and Lombardo shows up. After asking Kelly to get a blanket from the car, Lombardo is seen raising the wine bottle Suzie was drinking from and then Suzie is heard screaming. After wrapping the body in plastic, they throw it in the trunk of the car and drive out to the swamp, where Lombardo disposes of it. Suzie is reported missing by her family the next day and Duquette and Gloria are called in. Duquette believes that this is the beginning of the people involved being killed off, as he had warned her before. Suzie's blood and teeth are later found on the beach and her car is found by the bus terminal. After seeing his continued investigation, his superior insists that he drop the case. Regardless, he goes to Kelly's house anyway to protect her from what he believed would be an imminent attack from Sam. But when he arrives, she appears to attack him, shooting him in the arm, leaving him no choice but to kill her in self-defense. No charges are filed against Duquette, but he is discharged from the police force as a consequence of both Suzie and Kelly's death.

Later, while Lombardo is staying at a tropical resort, he finds Duquette in his shower. It turns out that the two of them had been working together the entire time. Although Lombardo is not pleased that Duquette killed Kelly instead of framing her as originally planned, Duquette insists that it leaves fewer loose ends. The two drink a toast to "no loose ends", and agree to go fishing on Lombardo's sailboat the following day.

While on the luxury sailboat Helios far out to sea, Lombardo knocks Duquette overboard, but he soon climbs back aboard and attacks Lombardo. However, he is shot in the leg with a spear. The shooter is Suzie, who is still alive and has altered her appearance, as she had been hiding aboard the boat. When Duquette begs Lombardo to save him, Lombardo responds that Duquette should not have killed Kelly. Suzie shoots and kills Duquette for killing Kelly and her friend, Davie, years before.

Suzie poisons Lombardo with a drink she poured for him and knocks him overboard with a swinging mainsail boom. She leaves him to drown at sea and continues to solo pilot the yacht.

While on her day off, Duquette's detective partner approaches Ruby and Walter about Duquette's reputation. Ruby tells her that Duquette used to spend his time in the glades, enjoying prostitutes. One night he was slapping around a girl that Suzie's friend Davie had a crush on and Davie tried to intervene. Next morning, the girl was gone and Davie was dead. Suzie witnessed the crime, so Duquette arrested her for possession, "...just to prove that he could." Ruby then reveals that Suzie is the half Sister of Sandra Van Ryan, making her Kelly's Aunt. Walter then reveales Suzie "was" a knowledgeable sailor and "had a 200 IQ".

It is revealed, through a series of flashbacks shown during the end credits, that Suzie had planned the whole thing in order to get all the money and revenge on both Lombardo and Duquette. Lombardo for leaving her in the jail as Suzie stated in court and Duquette for killing her friend Davie. Suzie had discovered that Lombardo and Kelly were sexually involved and used it to her advantage. As for Kelly's death, she had not attacked Duquette as he had claimed. In reality, when she tried to escape the guest house when he entered, he punched her to incapacitate her then broke into the gun case and shot her twice with his gun. He then used her hand to shoot himself in the shoulder with her gun.

In the final scene, Bowden comes upon Suzie on the beach, reiterating a line he used on her at court. He tells her how the money has been divided: some "pocket money", the rest in the numbered account Lombardo had, not including $1,000,000 each for Ruby and Walter and his "usual fee". She kisses him on the cheek, then walks off. He calls after her, telling her to "...be good".
